On November 19, in the vicinity of Campo Aquila – off Brindisi – our vessel M/V ‘Ievoli White’ conducted a training activity to test the application procedures of two distinct operational intervention plans concerning rescue of aircraft crashed at sea and the containment and removal of pollutants in the marine environment.
The two activities, coordinated by the Head of the Maritime District of Brindisi, are part of those annually scheduled by the General Command of the Coast Guard, with the additional involvement of equipment assigned to the Coast Guard of Brindisi, naval vessels of the Naval Operational Section of the Guardia di Finanza, and the Port Detachment of the Fire Brigade.
The role of our vessel ‘Ievoli White’ was significant: the exercise, aimed at maintaining crew training and testing the procedures and equipment employed, involved the deployment of onboard floating booms to contain a hypothetical oil slick, followed by the activation of skimmers for the recovery of the oil fraction.
Fire fighting equipment was then deployed, used for extinguishing large-scale fires on board vessels.
Operations in the affected sea area were monitored and supervised by the Coast Guard offshore patrol vessel CP 263, all under unfavorable weather conditions, precisely to make the scenario as realistic as possible and highlight any critical issues.
